Rekeying is almost always the right call when you simply want to change who has key access. But there are situations where replacing the entire lock is the better decision:

- The lock is a low-grade unit that offers minimal resistance to picking or kicking
- The hardware is old and no longer operates smoothly
- The door prep does not match current hardware or you want to change the function
- You are upgrading to a higher security grade or a different brand

Lock Grades Explained
The American National Standards Institute rates residential locks on a three-grade scale. Understanding this helps you choose the right hardware for your door.
- Grade 1 is the highest residential rating. These locks resist significant force, cycles of use, and picking. Recommended for front entry doors and any exterior door where security is a priority.
- Grade 2 is a solid mid-range option suitable for interior doors and secondary entry points. Offers good durability and reasonable security at a lower price than Grade 1.
- Grade 3 is the lowest rating and found mostly on cheap builder-grade hardware. It provides minimal security and is not something we recommend for exterior doors.

We install Schlage, Kwikset, and Baldwin as our primary residential brands. Schlage B-Series deadbolts are our most common recommendation for exterior doors. Kwikset offers good value for secondary entry points and interior doors. Baldwin is a premium option for homeowners who want both high security and high aesthetics. How long does a lock change take?
A single lock replacement typically takes 20 to 40 minutes depending on the door condition and hardware type. If the door prep needs adjustment for the new hardware, it may take a bit longer. Replacing all the entry locks on a standard home usually takes one to two hours total.
Can you replace a lock without leaving a door open?
Yes. We work quickly and methodically so the door is never left unsecured for more than a few minutes at a time. We remove the old hardware, prepare the door if needed, and install the new lock in a controlled sequence. Your home is not left exposed during the process.
Do you supply the locks or should I buy them?
We carry common residential lock hardware on our mobile unit and can supply everything needed for most jobs. If you have already purchased locks you want installed, we are happy to install customer-supplied hardware. Just let us know when you call so we can confirm compatibility with your door.
